Some say sunshine is one of those dangerous entities that need to be avoided at all costs, or at least if you must encounter it the proper protection needs to be worn. The classic SPF 15 will do the trick nicely and still allow a light tan to grace the skin. But who really cared about that? Sure the pasty skinned geeks who could not allow the sun to give them cancer or even a sprinkle of freckles might lather the sticky white substance on, but the classical college student wasn’t to be concerned. Tampa Bay, Florida was a place that needed an excess amount of sunscreen for the visiting tourists, but when you lived in the city and attended school there, you grew immune, or at least you convinced yourself you had. Temperence Toatalli was one of these locals who felt she was invincible and the sun would never dare to do her beautiful skin any damage. She had lived in Tampa Bay for the last year and was currently a student at Hudson University. The performance art major was originally from Detroit, Michigan. Sunscreen was rarely a necessity there. But today Temp was out sitting on a beach towel watching the waves crash against the shore.
Now lets take a step back and examine the situation. It was a Saturday afternoon, and no classes were being held. Temperence was alone at the beach. Her little baby blue two-piece bathing suit fit her like a glove and a pair of cheap, but cute sunglasses adorned her face. Out in the water your classic surfer boy was showing off for the crowds of people, and the little kids were running and splashing in the shallow area. Parents sat like hawks keeping their eyes and ears peeled not wanting to risk the lives of their precious little ones. Temp laughed at them as she watched them yell for their child to come back into shallower water. What she wouldn’t do however to have parents who cared about her like that. Growing up she had had it for a short while. But eventually her mother took that all away from her in a short five minutes at the max. It was mind-boggling how easily your life could be changed. But enough about that. Temp had spent enough time wondering why and how her mother had done all of that too her, and she was absolutely exhausted with it. It no longer mattered to her. Right now she was busy enjoying the sun’s rays on her skin and wanted to remain happy.
Her thoughts wandered into a different direction. Everyone knew Temperence Toatalli. Well some didn’t know her as well as others, but her name was unanimous with party. She attended every bash thrown by every person. It did not matter if she hung out with the crowd throwing the party she was there. Parties were her life. You would think school would, but you’d be wrong there. School was simply attended because it boosted her chances of becoming a renowned actress. She loved performing and she showed that at gatherings. It was like she was a different person. She would take on a different personality and go with it. Sometimes she’d pretend to be the little wallflower virgin that was just waiting for someone to teach her a thing or two about the real world, and then at times she’d be her wild and crazy self. It was all a game. Parties were just the first step in perfecting her art. Those that knew Temp just ignored her little charade and went on without her. But they could never deny that she was a talented actress. Hello, that was the whole reason she was attending Hudson in the first place.
Temp was pulled from her thoughts in an instant when a Frisbee went flying passed her. She blinked rapidly watching as a tall and muscular guy caught it. He could not be anymore then 25 years old. From her position on the sand she could see a nicely defined six-pack and a killer smile. Now Temperence was the type to flirt but she also liked to simply look. This guy was eye candy. She lowered her shades ever so slightly and watched as he crossed himself with the flying disc and then extended his arm with ease and sent the red plastic thing back towards the person standing on the other side of her. Now she didn’t want to seem like she was actually interested so she slipped her glasses back over her eyes, stretched her arms out behind her and slowly rotated her head to the other side. Now she could see the other member of the Frisbee squad and he was equally as good looking. A soft sigh escaped her lips and Temp knew exactly why she had left the frigidness of Detroit to come down to Florida, and it certainly was not the schooling.
Okay Temperence was a bit boy crazy. But what could you expect from a girl who was bounced between foster homes for 8 years? She had never really settled down and been able to have a relationship so she always looked at the boys. At her high schools she had been the slut. She would sleep around with anyone because she had never really known better. Her parents weren’t there to teach her about being proper and not having sex, plus she wasn’t exactly ready to be with someone for an extended amount of time. She had seen what a committed relationship could do to people. It turned people into raving lunatics. Her only model was her parent’s marriage and that had ended up horribly. No one knew how Temp had become and orphan. She had always said her parents had died in a car crash when she was 10, and no one questioned her after that. But the truth was jealousy and fighting was typical of her parents and eventually it lead to their deaths at the hand of her mother. A murder suicide is what the police referred to it as. Now that was what happened when you stayed with the same person for 20 years.
Rolling her eyes, she sat up on her towel and gathered her hair up on the back of her head. Slipping the rubber band from around her wrist she slid it into her hair and shrugged at the messy ponytail. It would have to do for now. Standing up she straightened her bathing suit and looked out into the waves. There were still a number of cute boys out there, and most of the kids were being called in to eat something with their families. Laughing Temperence took off at a sprint and ran straight into the water. She was immediately engulfed by the coldness and she shivered. Oh how she loved the ocean. She waded out a little farther and ducked under a wave, letting it wet her head. As she popped up she brushed the loose strands from her face and gazed around her. This was the life. No snowy weather, no teachers telling her to write papers, just a nice day at the beach…but now she sort of wished someone would come and give her some company.
